The Washington State Clean Buildings Act that was passed in 2019 applies to commercial real estate buildings 50,000 square feet or larger. Below are the deadlines to be compliant with this new law for CRE buildings over 50,000 square feet.

Buildings over 50,000 SF are considered Tier 1 buildings.

Buildings over 220,000 Square Feet: June 1, 2026
Buildings between 90,001-220,000 Square Feet: June 1, 2027
Buildings between 50,000-90,000 Square Feet: June 1, 2028

The State of Washington will also be adding an additional Tier 2 building status. Tier 2 buildings will include commercial real estate buildings between 20,000-50,000 square feet. Rules for this tier will be made available on December 19, 2023, but deadlines for compliance for Tier 2 buildings are still unknown.
